Project Concern
Project Concern spearheads four major donation drives per year.
The first is the school supply drive in the fall in which 2nd period classes collect paper, pens, pencils, notebooks, backpacks, markers, and other items that we then distribute to TOHS students who cannot afford adequate materials to get them through the school year.
We partner with the PTSA Student Group for the second drive which occurs at Thanksgiving. With the help of the counselors, administration and staff, coaches, club advisors, and classroom teachers, Project Concern collects the names of TOHS students whose families are unable to put a true Thanksgiving dinner on the table. Again, 2nd period classes collect non-perishable food, personal hygiene items and turkeys, and Project Concern and PTSA put together bags of groceries that are delivered to the students’ homes. In 2009, TOHS fed 29 families, and 35 extra bags of food (plus 85 turkeys) were delivered to MANNA, the local food bank.
While collecting the names for the Thanksgiving food drive, Project Concern also asks the TOHS community to consider adopting one of those families for the Christmas/Hanukkah holiday season. The students of those families in need fill out Wish Lists for themselves and their parents and siblings. We ask them to think of items they really NEED as well as a few fun things that will help brighten their day. The club advisors, coaches, administrators, and faculty and staff who adopt families then shop for gifts and deliver them to the homes to ensure a happier holiday season. To add money to the gift buying, Project Concern schedules two fundraisers in December at Barnes & Noble in Westlake Village, and club members and their advisor wrap gifts for shoppers at the book store. Barnes & Noble offers this as a free service for their customers, so any donations by the shoppers benefit Project Concern’s Adopt-A-Family program. This past year, 16 families were adopted by classes, clubs, departments, teams, and staff members.
The final drive handled by Project Concern occurs in the spring, just before Prom. The club does a prom clothes and funds drive to help TOHS students who cannot afford appropriate clothing to wear to the dance or who find the price of a ticket to this unforgettable high school event to be out of their reach.
The most compelling reason to join Project Concern is that your donations, your efforts and your time go to benefit the people you see everyday, walk next to in the hallway or sit beside in class.
TOHS truly cares about everyone in its community!
