For Monday, June 8 (Period 3) and Tuesday, June 9 (Periods 4 adn 5)
Make progress on and/or finish all assignments relating to Romeo and Juliet:
For Wednesday, June 3 (Period 3) and Thursday, June 4 (Periods 4 and 5)
Finish the Romeo and Juliet Study Guide (Acts 1 - V). You should have shared the first three acts with me already, but catch up if you're behind.
Begin working on the Romeo and Juliet Business Letter Assignment which is posted on the Handouts page of this web site right below the video worksheet. Decide on your two characters, brainstorm the events you can talk about to set up your complaint and provide evidence from the play that shows me you know what the plot involves and how the events reveal the personalities and motivations of the characters. Ideally, you could have one of the letters drafted by the Friday office hours, and you could drop into the session to share it with me and get feedback.
At the end of the week, I will post on the Handouts page the final two documents you'll need to complete the year--a comprehensive quiz on Romeo and Juliet and a worksheet using the words you already have in the Romeo and Juliet vocabulary list on the Handouts page.
REMINDER for PERIODS 4 AND 5: NO ZOOM CLASS THIS THURSDAY, JUNE 4. USE THE FRIDAY OPEN OFFICE HOURS TO CONNECT WITH ME AND MAKE SURE YOU'RE ON THE RIGHT TRACK WITH YOUR ASSIGNMENTS.
For Monday, June 1 (Period 3) and Tuesday, June 2 (Periods 4 and 5)
Read Act V of The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Answer the study guide questions and share those answers with me.
Go to the Handouts page and read and annotate the business letter writing assignment. Decide between which two characters you want to "write" the letters and plan which events you are going to summarize and analyze to show you understand the plot and character development in the play. This will be the final assignment you complete for the year and will be due the last meeting for your class period (Period 3 - Wednesday, June 10, and Periods 4 and 5 - Thursday, June 11).
There will be two other assignments (a comprehensive quiz on the play and a vocabulary worksheet) due for the year, but they are shorter and require less pre-planning and writing time.
You will receive the those two assignments on the Handouts page later next week, and they will be due any time before the last day of school.
For Tuesday, May 26 (Periods 4 and 5) and Wednesday, May 27 (Period 3)
Read Act IV of The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Answer the study guide questions and share with me.
REMINDER: Next week, since we have a Monday holiday, Period 3 will meet on Wednesday and Friday. Periods 4 and 5 will meet normally on Tuesday and Thursday.
For Wednesday, May 20 (Period 3) and Thursday, May 21 (Periods 4 and 5)

For Monday, May 18 (Period 3) and Tuesday, May 19 (Periods 4 and 5)
Read Act III of The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. In your print textbook, this part of the play covers pages 425-446 and questions 52-85. In the online edition of your textbook, just navigate to Unit 4, Whole Class Learning, Act III, and read, answering those same questions on the study guide.
REMINDER: Please share each act of questions with me so we can make sure everyone is following along correctly and understanding the play.
For Wednesday, May 13 (Period 3) and Thursday, May 14 (Periods 4 and 5) PERIODS 4 and 5--REMEMBER WE HAVE NO CLASS ON THURSDAY, MAY 14, BECAUSE OF MY CHEMO. SEE MY NOTE ABOVE ABOUT AN OPEN OFFICE HOURS ZOOM ON FRIDAY!
You should have read the Prologue and Act I of The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. In your print textbook, this part of the play covers pages 376-396. In the online edition, you will find the play in Unit 4, Whole Class Learning; read lines 1-146. In both cases, do the two introductory questions on the Prologue and #1-27 for Act I. Try to share your study guide at the end of each act so the amount to master is more manageabe.
REMEMBER TO USE THE SUPPORTS THE BOOK PROVIDES FOR YOU--TRANSLATIONS AND VOCABULARY IN THE MARGINS, ETC.
NEW: Read Act II and answer questions #28-51 on the study guide. Remember, you will need to share the study guide with me at the END OF EACH ACT. There are FIVE ACTS, so don't procrastinate; answer the questions as you read to make it easier to find the answers.
For Monday, May 11 (Period 3) and Tuesday, May 12 (Periods 4 and 5)
You should have already completed the two reading checks-- The Odyssey Part I and Part II--that are posted on the Handouts page. Share your answers with me.

REMEMBER TO USE THE SUPPORTS THE BOOK PROVIDES FOR YOU--TRANSLATIONS AND VOCABULARY IN THE MARGINS, ETC.
For Wednesday, May 6 (Period 3) and Thursday, May 7 (Periods 4 and 5)
REMINDER: You should SHARE WITH ME your completed study guide for The Odyssey and the vocabulary for The Odyssey if you have not already done so.
Also, make sure you SHARED with me the Hero Movie Analysis Project. If you worked on the project with a partner, make sure all names are on the essay so I know who has earned credit.
NEW: Do The Odyssey Reading Checks for both Part I and Part II as posted on the Handouts page. BE SURE TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. THERE IS WRITING INVOLVED.
Then, share both of them with me.
Next, go back to the Handouts page and save as Google docs the following:
1)Shakespeare in the Classroom video worksheet,
2)Romeo and Juliet Study Guide,
3)Romeo and Juliet Vocabulary, and
4) Shakespeak worksheet.
Watch the video about Shakespeare by following this link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAfih_YUgMk
While you're watching, fill out the Shakespeare in the Classroom worksheet that you saved as a Google doc and share it with me.
For Monday, May 4 (Period 3) and Tuesday, May 5 (Periods 4 and 5)
Read Part II of The Odyssey, lines 998 -1623 online or pages 595 - 616 in the printed textbook.
Answer the remainder of the study guide questions 48 - 82. When you finish the questions, you should share your study guide with me, from YOUR LEARN account to MY LEARN account, [email protected]. Finish the vocabulary, as well, and SHARE that.
Be thinking how Odysseus demonstrates his epic hero qualities when he's planning with Telemachus, talking with Penelope, winning the challenge she lays out for the suitors and finally killing the suitors.
Challenge yourselves! Locate THREE MORE EPIC SIMILES in Part II, keeping in mind the criteria for an epic simile--it's several lines long, compares something in the narrative to something outside of the poem, and if you remove it from the narrative, you will lose no key events or outcomes.
REMINDERS: Your movie hero analysis essay is due FRIDAY, MAY 1. If you did the movie
project with a partner, make sure BOTH of your names are on the write up.
Then, SHARE it from YOUR LEARN to MY LEARN account.
You should have memorized ALL 37 GREEK ROOTS by the end of the
weekend.
(The list of roots is on my Handouts page. You probably already know some of
them!)
For Wednesday, April 29 (Period 3) and Thursday, April 30 (Periods 4 and 5)
Finish reading Part I of The Odyssey (The Land of the Dead, The Sirens, Scylla and Charybdis, and The Cattle of the Sun God); this will take you from line 525 to line 997 online or page 576 through 589 in the print textbook. Answer questions 23-47 on the study guide. Be prepared to prove how Odysseus demonstrates that he is an epic hero at each of the four stopping points.
REMINDERS: Your hero movie analysis argument essay is due FRIDAY. Please SHARE it from YOUR LEARN ACCOUNT to MY LEARN ACCOUNT.
MEMORIZE AT LEAST 5 of the GREEK ROOTS EVERY DAY to get ready for our in-class contest!
For Monday, April 27 (Period 3) and Tuesday, April 28 (Periods 4 and 5)
Read the section of The Odyssey for The Cyclops, lines 109-525 or if you're using the print textbook, pages 564-576. Remember, you can also LISTEN to the text in the online version.
Answer questions 11-22 on The Odyssey Study Guide.
PLEASE DO NOT SHARE THE ODYSSEY STUDY GUIDE WITH ME UNTIL WE ARE COMPLETELY DONE READING THE ODYSSEY. IN THAT WAY, YOU WILL ONLY NEED TO SHARE THE STUDY GUIDE WITH ME ONCE.
Watch Great Books - The Odyssey by following this link
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zkXu6eAYDU
and completing the worksheet posted on my Handouts page.
REMINDER: Keep working on The Hero Movie Analysis Project, either on your own or with your partner. Your essay is due on Friday, May 1.
You should also be doing The Odyssey vocabulary parts of speech and definitions as you read; don't save it all for the end because you'll just be making things more difficult for yourself. The same is true for the study guide questions. ANSWER THEM AS YOU READ!!!
For the Week of Monday, April 20 (Period 3) and Tuesday, April 21 (Periods 4 and 5)
English 9CP Pre-ETHOS
I am continuing to send emails home to report work that is not turned in. PLEASE share your character worksheet and hero cycles with me, if you did not already do so.
As I begin to input in Q, you will be able to see acknowledgement of work turned in for a score even if no official grade is posted at the moment. Remember to open the Google docs you have shared with me to see the comments I have made.
Ongoing: Due Friday, May 1 (11 days from now) - The Hero Movie Analysis Project. Find the instructions on the Handouts page. If you (alone or with a partner) want to watch and write about a movie that is not on the list provided, please email me for approval. If the movie is rated R, I cannot approve your selection unless your parent emails [email protected]. I cannot take verbal approvals since I need a written record.
For Wednesday (Period 3) and Thursday (Periods 4 and 5):
Begin our unit on The Odyssey:
Wednesday, April 8 and Thursday, April 9
English 9CP Pre-ETHOS
I am continuing to send emails home to report work that is not turned in. PLEASE share your character worksheet and hero cycles with me, if you did not already do so.
We have done Perseus, Theseus and Jason together; you only have Hercules left to do on your own. Remember that the Hero Cycle follows very logically the breakdown of the standard plot diagram--Call to Adventure (Exposition and Conflict), Helpers, Crossing into Adventure, Helpers (same or new) and Trials (Rising Action), Supreme Ordeal (Climax), Flight (Falling Action) and Boon (Resolution). REMEMBER TO START AT THE TOP OF THE CYCLE DIAGRAM AND MOVE TO THE LEFT (counterclockwise) SO THAT YOU END AT THE BOON.
Please share each cycle from YOUR learn account to mine ([email protected]).
By the time you start Spring Break on Friday, you can watch the Disney Hercules video and more fully enjoy the differences and changes orchestrated by Disney. Go to my Handouts page for the suggested questions you should ask yourselves as you watch the movie.
You may also want to think about which movie you will watch with a partner (or by yourself) by looking at the Hero Movie Analysis Project on my Handouts page. The write up will not be due until the week after we return from Spring Break, but you might want to take the time over the break to coordinate with your viewing partner.

PLEASE HELP THE YEARBOOK WITH THE FOLLOWING SURVEY:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScQdo7os0v8ue4a0FEWCRf6Ok9y-QfsKwl9ghkBi3cwxZl3ow/viewform?vc=0&c=0&w=1&usp=mail_form_link
Some of you still have not shared the completed character chart with me. I will begin emailing home tonight and tomorrow.
We are continuing the discussion of plot and characters in "The Most Dangerous Game" so that we can then merge into the equivalent analysis of The Hero Cycle.
If you were absent from our Zoom class today, please go to the Handouts page and open "The Most Dangerous Game" RC; this reading check will help you see if you have complete understanding of the story. If you want feedback, email me your answers.
Make sure you have saved as Google docs The Hero Cycle Diagram from the Handouts page FOUR TIMES--once for each of the hero myths. If you want to do the extra credit for Psyche, you will need to save the cycle a fifth time.
The first myth you will read--by following the link on the Handouts page--is Perseus. As you read, annotate on the Hero Cycle diagram for each of the labels provided--Call to Adventure, Helpers (2), Trials, Supreme Ordeal, Flight and Boon.
REMINDERS: If you filed a request on the CVUSD web site for a device, your parents should have received an email from the district instructing you to show up at TOHS tomorrow, Wednesday or Thursday (THIS WEEK) between 9 and 11 a.m. to get your Chromebook.
The Zoom meeting schedule remains the same for this week and is listed below in homework for Monday, March 23.
Wednesday, March 25 and Thursday, March 26
English 9CP Pre-ETHOS
We will continue our discussion of the characters and plot in "The Most Dangerous Game" when we meet next week--Monday for Period 3 and Tuesday for Periods 4 and 5.
By now, you should have shared the character chart with me; at the very latest, share it from your learn account to mine during my office hours tomorrow (Friday), 9 a.m. to noon.
PLEASE READ THE STORY OR LISTEN TO THE AUDIO FILE. You need to be prepared if I call on you. :)
To help you plan for next week, please go to the Handouts page of this web site and find the two documents--"Four Greek Myths and the Hero Cycle" and "The Hero Cycle Diagram"--which will form the backbone of our next unit of study. You DO NOT need to save the "Four Greek Myths" as a Google doc; you just need to know it's there to provide the links to the myths we are going to study. Please DO save "The Hero Cycle Diagram" as a Google doc FOUR TIMES, and give each one the name of a hero--Jason, Perseus, Theseus, Hercules. You will be able to enter information on each Google doc as you read each myth and ultimately share them with me. DO NOT SHARE ANY OF THE CYCLE DIAGRAMS UNTIL WE HAVE COMPLETED EACH MYTH. If you want to do the extra credit assignment about Psyche, you will need to save the diagram a fifth time for that myth.
REMINDERS: If you are experiencing technical difficulties with your Chromebook, ask for assistance by filling out this form from the CVUSD web site.
https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=CABtfCNG5Eug5mONUZfJrjzsLwThzWZPhw_h7_B0BWRUMVAxSEdEV0NVTjBZWVVTSEZWR045UUVOWCQlQCN0PWc
If you don't have a device and want to check one out, go to the CVUSD web site and complete and submit the Technology Access Request.
When the district schedules the next technology day (probably next week), I will advise you.

Before you begin reading the whole story, go to the Handouts page of my web site and open "The Most Dangerous Game" Character Analysis chart, saving it as a Google doc. Be sure to follow the instructions and provide evidence for or each answer. (This could be a quote, an example, etc from the story.) SHARE your completed chart with me through [email protected].

Finally, write a sentence about WHY what you proved is important--WHY should we examine the friendship of George and Lennie? Does their friendship help us understand something universal? When you write a strong conclusion--especially a strong last sentence of that paragraph--you can use three to five words of that sentence as the title of your essay.
REMINDER: Make sure you bring your HANDS GRID to class tomorrow to use in discussing and choosing quotes for the hands mobile table group project. Do the point recovery for your prepositional phrases quiz. Remember to follow these specific steps, or you will not receive full credit. Here is the example for correcting #1 on the quiz:
“Among” is a preposition, and “students” is a noun; “in” is a preposition, and “professions” is a noun.
As you can see, the first sentence MUST say HOW MANY phrases are in the sentence. You received this information in class today.
The second sentence details WHERE those phrases BEGIN and END.
The third sentence gives the REASONS--based on the fact that ALL prepositional phrases BEGIN with a PREPOSITION and END with a noun, no matter how many words are or are not in between.
KEEP YOUR LIST OF PREPOSITIONS THAT I GAVE YOU ON HAND AS YOU DO THE CORRECTIONS TO REINFORCE WORDS THAT ARE PREPOSITIONS AND TO RULE OUT WORDS THAT ARE NOT.
REMINDER: Bring your textbook every day!

- Shakespeare in the Classroom Video Worksheet - already due
- Romeo and Juliet Study Guide (Acts I-V) - due by this weekend
- Two business letters between characters in Romeo and Juliet - due June 10 (Period 3) or June 11 (Periods 4 and 5)

There will be two other assignments (a comprehensive quiz on the play and a vocabulary worksheet) due for the year, but they are shorter and require less pre-planning and writing time.

- Go to the Handouts page and locate the following FOUR documents that you will want to save as Google docs and begin completing as you read. 1) The Odyssey Study Guide, 2) The Odyssey Vocabulary, 3) The Odyssey Word Families, and 5) Greek Roots.
- Begin reading The Odyssey in Unit 5 Whole Class Learning of the online textbook. Read lines 1-108 (Homer's Plea to the Muse of Epic Poetry, Sailing from Troy and The Lotus Eaters). Stop at the The Cyclops. This will cover Questions 1-10 on The Odyssey Study Guide. FILL IN THE ANSWERS AS YOU READ SO YOU WILL NOT HAVE TO BACK UP AND WASTE TIME.
- If you want to get ahead on the homework for the remainder of this week, read The Cyclops and answer Questions 11-22.
- You should also be filling in the definitions and parts of speech for the words on The Odyssey Vocabulary as you read.
- Memorize 3-5 of the Greek roots EACH DAY so that by the end of next week, you'll have them all done and be able to participate fully in the competition we'll hold in class.
- Save The Odyssey Word Families for now. You don't need to do anything with this document other than convert it to a Google doc ready to work with later.

If you don't have a device and want to check one out, go to the CVUSD web site and complete and submit the Technology Access Request.
When the district schedules the next technology day (probably next week), I will advise you.

Remember the key components -- restate (reword) your thesis from the introductory paragraph, and write a sentence for what you proved in EACH of the body paragraphs.
Pre-EThOS 9CP
Do the point recovery for your prepositional phrases quiz. Remember to follow these specific steps, or you will not receive full credit. Here is the example for correcting #1 on the quiz:
- There are two prepositional phrases in this sentence.
