Continue working on your personal narrative; the complete rough draft is due for peer editing on TUESDAY, December 10, and the final draft is due WEDNESDAY, December 11.  You should try to keep to the following schedule:
  • Over the weekend--finish writing the rough draft.
  • Monday in class--re-read what you have written, checking for correct MLA format and no vanilla vocabulary.
  • Monday homework--re-read your rough draft again, and make adjustments.
  • Tuesday in class--share your draft with another class member, and peer edit.  Look critically at active verbs, precise nouns and valuable adjectives and adverbs.
  • Tuesday homework--polish your draft, considering and incorporating needed changes suggested by your peer editor.
  • Wednesday in class--clarify any remaining questions and submit/share your final draft with me at emoore@learn.conejousd.net.
REMINDER:  You should regularly consult two of the documents on my Handouts page as you continue drafting your narrative.
  • PowerPoint presentation entitled "Tips for Writing Your Personal Narrative"
  • Research Guide and Style Sheet (first page only regarding MLA format)

Thursday, December 5
Pre-EThOS 9CP
Finish the Organize Your Thoughts worksheet (paragraph organizer) for your personal narrative.
Begin typing AFTER reading page 1 of the Research Guide and Style Sheet listed on the Handouts page of this web site in order to know MLA guidelines for formatting your document.

Wednesday, December 4
Pre-EThOS 9CP
Complete the Personal Narrative graphic organizer that you received in class today.  Remember to select an event in which you can focus on a very small window of time (5 minutes or less) in order to include vivid language, precise imagery and many details to help your reader experience exactly what you did.
After finishing this graphic organizer, move on to the Organize Your Thoughts worksheet to begin planning the order of your narrative.  You should try to have the Introduction and Body Paragraph 1 planned before tomorrow's class.  You will have time in class to plan the remaining paragraphs.
REMINDER:  If you intended to do Point Recovery for the Chs. 12-17 quiz, you have a one-day grace period.  After tomorrow (Thursday), I will not accept corrections, except from those people who took the test late due to absence.

Monday, December 2 - Tuesday, December 3
Pre-EThOS 9CP
Complete the No Valnilla, Please! worksheet that you did with your partner in class.  Remember to put both of your names on it and share it with me at emoore@learn.conejousd.net.
IF YOU KNOW YOUR PARTNER SHARED THE DOCUMENT WITH ME, and YOU DO NOT HAVE A SCORE IN Q, THAT MEANS YOUR PARTNER FORGOT TO PUT YOUR NAME ON THE DOCUMENT.  I CAN'T GUESS WITH WHOM THE DOC WAS SHARED IF THE DOC ITSELF SHOWS NO ADDITIONAL NAMES.
If you need another copy of No Vanilla, Please!, go to the Handouts page and either print one or save a copy as a Google doc and share the completed worksheet with me.
Work on the Personal Narrative Essay packet that you received in class. Read and annotate the front and back of page 1.  Begin thinking of an incident, event, occurrence within a very short time frame that you could narrate in great detail with precise diction and vivid imagery (all senses).
Choose either of the mentor texts--Narrative Essay Template #1 or #2--in the packet to fill in Monday night.  You will complete the other template Tuesday night.
REMINDER:  Since you received your graded Chs. 12-17 TKAM quiz today, you have two days to do and turn any point recovery to boost your score.  Do the corrections the same as we have in the past; if you are unsure of the process, please see me before or after class.  Point Recovery corrections are due WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4.

Reverse side of test (except quotes):  Write THREE sentences that address the topic of the question.

Matching: Write the word you missed from the left column, then write means, then write the correct definition from the right column.  State the word again and its part of speech.  Then, write an original sentence showing you know the meaning and where that part of speech can fit in a standard English sentence.
Word Bank: Write the sentence with the correct word in the blank; mark that word in some way--box it, underline it, highlight it, etc. Then, state: The sentence needed a/an (part of speech).  Then, state:  (word) is a/an (part of speech), and it means (state the definition).

Get the salmon colored packet signed (3 places) by your parent and return it to class in preparation for getting your Chromebook next week.

Tuesday, September 3
Pre-EThOS 9CP
Do the point recovery for your prepositional phrases quiz.  Remember to follow these specific steps, or you will not receive full credit.  Here is the example for correcting #1 on the quiz:
  1.  There are two prepositional phrases in this sentence.
The first one is “among students”, and the second one is “in industrial . . . professions.”
“Among” is a preposition, and “students” is a noun; “in” is a preposition, and “professions”              is a noun.
As you can see, the first sentence MUST say HOW MANY phrases are in the sentence.  You received this information in class today.
The second sentence details WHERE those phrases BEGIN and END.
The third sentence gives the REASONS--based on the fact that ALL prepositional phrases BEGIN with a PREPOSITION and END with a noun, no matter how many words are or are not in between.
KEEP YOUR LIST OF PREPOSITIONS THAT I GAVE YOU ON HAND AS YOU DO THE CORRECTIONS TO REINFORCE WORDS THAT ARE PREPOSITIONS AND TO RULE OUT WORDS THAT ARE NOT.
REMINDER:  Bring your textbook every day!

Friday, August 30
Pre-EThOS 9CP
There is no homework over the weekend-----HOWEVER,
if you did not turn in your I AM poem, prepare to turn it in by Tuesday when we return.  You will lose points, but that's better than a zero.
REMINDERS:  Bring your binder and Volume I EVERY DAY.  I am planning on doing a materials check AT LEAST TWICE next week.

Thursday, August 29
Pre-EThOS 9CP
Study for the prepositional phrase quiz tomorrow.  Focus on the list of prepositions you received the first week of school so that you will recognize them when they are used in sentences.  If you need another copy of the list, go to the Handouts page of this web site and print one.
Finish the final draft of your I AM poem; it should be typed and decorated with images.  You may include a background, clip art, photos, original drawings, cutouts from magazines, etc.  Make it represent you and make you proud!
REMINDER:  Continue bringing Volume I every day.

Wednesday, August 28
Pre-EThOS 9CP
Review your notes on pages 254-255 and write a summary of "1963: The Year That Changed Everything" on page 256.  You should ONLY state the facts in the article, not give your opinion or evaluate why the author included those facts.  You are acting like a news reporter of the events.
REMINDERS:  Study for the quiz on prepositional phrases, which will be on Friday.  It will be multiple choice and will ask you to identify HOW MANY phrases are in each of ten sentences.
Make sure you are ready to turn in your finished, typed and decorated I AM poem on Friday.  It is worth 25 points.
BRING YOUR BOOK TO CLASS EVERY DAY!  I will do another materials check tomorrow for five points!

Tuesday, August 27
Pre-EThOS 9CP
Finish writing the FOUR remaining sentences on the first prepositional phrase worksheet we worked on in class.  Remember to make sure there are THREE prepositional phrases in each of your original sentences.  Put parentheses around each of the phrases, and then label the subjects (S) and verbs (V) of the sentences.
Do sentences 1-10 on the second phrase worksheet, which you received today. You must be prepared to analyze and correct them with your table group before continuing on with sentences 11-20.
If you need another copy of EITHER worksheet, go to the Handouts page of this web site and print them.
REMINDERS:   Your I AM poem final draft (typed and decorated) is due THIS FRIDAY,
